The word depression is often used when we are feeling sad, fed up or feeling down. However, feelings of sadness are normal reactions to situations that we are upset about, and will usually pass after a short time.
But depression is different to feeling down or sad. It can last for a longer time, or pass and come back again and again, and it effects our ability to feel good about ourselves and others and our ability to feel that life is worthwhile. It is not something that we can just “get over”.

There are no simple solutions to dealing with depression, but the more we understand it and know there are things we can do to help ourselves if and when we feel depressed, the better chance we have of dealing with it.
