CBT is a focused problem solving psychotherapy that has been shown in studies to be highly effective for the treatment of many mental health problems such as depression, general anxiety disorders and panic attacks. CBT is based on the idea that how we think (Cognition), how we act (Behavior) and how we feel (Emotion) all interact with each other. Our thoughts determine our feelings and our behaviour.
The therapist and client act as a team to identify and solve problems. The therapist helps the client to overcome his difficulties through changing his thinking, his emotional responses and so his behaviour.
In difficult situations, if we change the way think, we can feel better by choosing a different set of actions, even if the situation does not change. During treatment the client actively learns to apply strategies to the problem which brought him to therapy.
