Social anxiety or social phobia is a fear of being around other people
People who suffer from social anxiety feel self conscious around others. They think everyone is watching them and being critical of them.
While they may know that their thoughts are not rational the anxiety is so painful they learn to stay away from social situations and avoid other people.
People with social anxiety typically:
- Feel incapacitating self consciousness around other people, even those they know
- Have a hyper sensitivity to a perception of being judged negatively
- Avoid people and social situations by withdrawing
- Often spend a lot of time alone in a room with the door closed
